The Allen Sports Downtown folding bike is an entry level folding bicycle offered by Allen Sports, a company that has been producing excellent folding bikes for several years now. This thorough review will provide you with all you need to know about the bike; our thoughts, its specifications, a list of pros and cons and also our final review rating. Allen Sports was a smaller brand in the industry until 2013 when the company saw exponential growth, they have since released a whole host of new bikes. The Allen Sports Downtown is an aluminium framed entry level folding bike, as it stands it is their cheapest model – but don’t let that put you off just yet.
Straight out of the box the Downtown looks like it has been made to last, each of the individual components is of high quality – which is quite surprising giving the low price point. I will come out and say that I am not a fan of the colors that the bike has, the white frame with minimal additions doesn’t do it for me. However, this is simply my personal opinion. Aside from this, the bike is easily assembled by making a quick and easy adjustment to the locking mechanism.
The bike then unfolds rapidly and is locked firmly into place by rotating the wheels. One cool feature that the Allen Sports Downtown has is the almost automatic locking mechanism, the bike effectively locks itself together – a bonus over the majority of other folding bikes around.
Allen Sports have ensured that the Downtown has a very minimal design, it is truly straightforward to set this bike up and get on the road. The bike is folded away so quickly because of this, I clocked it in under 13 seconds – which is almost unheard of and extremely impressive! Despite this, one issue that I have found is that the bike doesn’t fold down to a small enough size for me. The bike is fairly large and to add to that, you might need to purchase something to hold the wheels and handlebar together when folded away (possibly a cheap velcro strap or something?). The bike doesn’t utilise the larger 450mm wheels that are found on other Allen Sports folding bikes, these I found are both faster and more comfortable to ride on.
On the road the bike handles beautifully, it really does. Allen Sports have done a truly fantastic job in getting a single speed folding bike to run so smoothly. Throughout my city, along the flats, the bike was quite fast and required little effort to get it up to speed. I tested the bike for over 4 hours and at no point did I feel uncomfortable with the ride.
One issue, as with all single speed bikes, is that it does struggle up steep hills. If you are planning on using this folding bike in regions with lots of hills to ascend then it might be wise to think about purchasing a geared bike instead. However, if you are a city dweller or living in an urban environment, then this folding bicycle could be a good entry level one for you.

To conclude, I believe that the Allen Sports Downtown is a beautifully crafted bike. While it is not the most aesthetically pleasing folding bike around, it is cheap and is made of high quality components that will stand the test of time. I would personally spend slightly more and get a slightly more refined bike, however this is not a bad starting point for beginners. Check out my other Allen Sports folding bike reviews.
