If you’re planning on purchasing a folding bike for the purpose of commuting then the Ford by Dahon Convertible may be just the bike for you. Branded by a giant in the motoring world and designed by the master craftsmen over at Dahon, from those facts alone you know you’re onto a winner. This 7 speed bike has everything a commuter could possibly require in order to have a stress-less ride to and from any location. The bike itself has been marketed as one of the most portable models around, and while we don’t necessarily agree with that, it’s certainly a fine model none the less.
Built from the ground up with a sturdy aluminium frame, this gorgeously styled folding bike is a comfortable ride on the road. Unlike many others, the Ford by Dahon Convertible is as smooth as anything and very few vibrations are felt when you’re riding it. Not only that, but the derailleurs on this model are fantastic – this is something that we have come to expect over the years from anything Shimano.
Whilst 7 gear speeds may not seem like a lot, it’s plenty for inner city riders and for those who don’t anticipate attempting to climb steep hills on a semi regular basis. One excellent benefit that this folding bike offers is a fully adjustable stem, this effortlessly enables riders to adjust the dimensions of the bike based on the size of the rider. If you’re short, or tall, this bike is going to be perfectly suited to you. Dahon, with all of their expertise, clearly appreciate the importance of this and the impact it has on rider comfort.
The folding mechanism of the Ford by Dahon Convertible is outstanding too and this is where the bike truly shines. It has been designed in such a way that any commuter can get off the bike and get walking almost instantly. We ran a few tests and found that we could have it folded down in under 10 seconds, perfect for any commuter that frequently finds themselves in a hurry. Not only that, but Dahon have done a great job in ensuring that the bike takes up a very minimal space once folded away too. You won’t ever find yourself struggling to put this bike away while you’re train is about to leave, the Dahon Convertible really does shine in this department.
One downside to this model is that it is relatively heavy, it weighs in at approximately 41 pounds, while this is a lot. It’s still perfect for commuters who don’t intend on carrying the bike around for long distances. For many commuters this is a simple side note, however if you do intend on holding it for prolonged periods of time, it may be better for you to find a slightly lighter model.
As a result of this the transitional period from carrying the bike on public transport, to riding quickly throughout the urban city sprawl is very minimal. It is therefore perfect as a commuter bike so long as you don’t intend on carrying it for extended distances over the course of your day, if you do then I would recommend a more lightweight model. The Dahon Convertible has been well received by all of the public, very few have any complaints – and we can certainly see why.
The bike’s aesthetics are also stunning, you can tell from afar that it is a premium model and while we’re not the biggest fan of the Ford branding on it, it’s not too much of a concern! One striking feature that I haven’t mentioned yet is the low price point of this folding bicycle, coming in at under $400 dollars, buyers are getting a real bargain and true quality for their money.

All in all, we have very little to complain about with the Ford by Dahon Convertible, aside from the fact that it is a little on the heavy side. A perfect folding bike for commuters and leisure riders too. Copious amounts of effort has been put into the design of this bike and Dahon’s new quick fold system is a wonder to behold – very few models will be folded down quicker than the aptly named Convertible.
