This review of the Dahon Vigor P9 illustrates that it is possible to buy a high performance folding bike without spending every last dollar. Dahon have developed the Vigor P9 with exactly this in mind, the bicycle is capable of functioning with exceptional efficiency throughout an urban landscape, but also anywhere off-road too.
[pullquote align=”full” cite=”It is difficult to pinpoint what Dahon do that makes their folding bikes so special, but the Vigor P9 is another stunning example of this perplexity. This bike is, simply put, utterly outstanding in so many ways!” link=”” color=”#960000″ class=”” size=”18″][/pullquote]
Our first impressions of the bike after removing the packaging was that it has a gorgeously clean design. It boasts a minimally styled paint job, internal cabling and an elegantly smoothed silver aluminium frame. This beauty is sure to be the envy of everyone on the road.
Another essential thing to note is that the Vigor P9 does not need tuning up, it is good to go straight out of the box and has very few complications – perfect if you’re looking at purchasing your first folding bike. The bike itself can be folded and un-folded in under 15 seconds which is well below today’s industry average of 23 seconds.
I think it is essential to start with clarifying what a wonderful job Dahon have done with making the Vigor P9 such a smooth ride. The hydroformed Dalloy vigor frame facilitates very minimal vibrations when riding on all types of terrain, to add to this, the stock 20″ wheels (Schwalbe Marathon Supreme) are extremely sturdy too – they provide an excellent grip on the road. Another of the outstanding features that this folding bicycle offers is the compacted NEOS derailleur on the back, this not only provides rapid gear shifting, it is renowned for its reliability too – gears jamming will be a thing of the past with this truly premium component.
Close Up & Specs
Dahon have clearly made no compromises whatsoever with the Vigor P9, it handles so well on the road and the Sunrace 11″ – 32″ 9 speed rear cogs enable it to easily combat steep hills too. Yes, it doesn’t possess the 20+ gears that some of the more premium folding bikes do, however the majority of the time these are simply surplus to requirements. This bike folds down to an extremely manageable size that will not trouble anybody, no matter where you plan on taking the bike. It weighs in at just under 26lbs (11.7kg), so while it is by no means the lightest folding bike around, it isn’t going to trouble anybody too much – unless you plan on carrying the bike for particularly prolonged periods of time.
