Without a doubt, the Vilano Edge single speed road bike is one of the most popular fixed speed road bikes that is available today. Fixed gear bikes are commonly known as fixie bicycles and they are growing in popularity year after year. Vilano were one of the pioneers that brought fixie road bikes from being relatively unknown to being found all over the United States. Anywhere, without any further ado, I’m going to be taking you all through what exactly made the Vilano Edge fixed gear road bike so popular.

Aside from all of the astonishingly high quality components, the first thing that caught my eye was the gorgeous design of the Vilano Edge. For me it looks like a perfect hybrid between classic road bike styles and more modern looks of today. It is possible to buy the bike in a range of different colors and all of them look equally great in my opinion. Now that I have got that out of the way, you will all be pleased to know that the bike’s aesthetics are not the only thing that impressed me – in fact, there’s an awful lot of positives that I’m going to tell you about. Firstly, the flip flop hub of the Edge enables riders to specify whether or not they want to ride a fixie or a single speed road bike.
Another key characteristic of the Vilano Edge is that it is good to go, right out of the box. You don’t need to spend hours fiddling around with the bike to get it configured perfectly for you, quite the contrary actually – you should have this beauty up and running within about half an hour. To add to this, the Edge has such high quality components that I genuinely can’t think of anything that you could possibly want to ever replace on it. The frame is incredibly sturdy, it has been crafted by the experts over at Vilano using high tensile steel – this material is essentially indestructible and will take an absolute beating before becoming damaged. The downside to it is that it does add a bit of weight, and I am always skeptical about buying a steel based bike, but in this instance the Vilano Edge didn’t really appear to be much heavier than its aluminum counterparts.
The bike was an absolute pleasure to ride on the road, I very rarely come across bikes that are this smooth on the road. Vilano have clearly invested in quality here, when I was on the road I could barely feel any vibrations being transferred through the frame. I think that while the Edge was more than capable of making it through my little test course in the local town, it may be slightly more challenging on a steep incline – as you would expect for a bike designed to be used in the city. Despite being a single geared road bike, the Vilano Edge was extremely quick at accelerating from a stand still, I was pleasantly surprised with this and it is not something I’ve been used to with fixed gear bikes in the past. Similarly, the braking system performed very well in a smooth motion, rather than being overtly jerky like some of the cheaper models around. It is clear to see why Vilano have become such a prominent brand in recent times, while they clearly do not design bikes for people looking to spend thousands of dollars – they do a very good job at getting quality out there to people on a shoe string budget, time and time again.
Before you purchase the Vilano Edge, please ensure that you are able to put it together yourself as it does not come as one piece. While the procedure required to fit all the components together is not too challenging, it could be a bit tricky for a beginner – fortunately Vilano have provided some detailed instructions for how to do it. Furthermore, if you read the instructions and are still stuck, there is an abundance of videos on YouTube that detail how to do it too. One thing that will be required on your half is a few tools such as a screwdriver and wrench.
If you are more concerned about the quality of your ride than the specifications of it, then you should be seriously considering the Vilano Edge road bike. It is a truly excellent single speed road bike that is well suited to beginner road bike riders and some experts too. If you are in need of a road bike that is cheap, competent on flat roads in the city and extremely reliable then the Vilano Edge could be for you. It has so many outstanding features that when added together you would expect the bike to cost considerably more. This beautiful fixie is one of the best at this price range, it exceeds in every single way.

Overall, as you can all tell, I was very impressed with the AL-1 and think that it is an outstanding road bike. There were very few negatives to take away, I think that the main disadvantage for me is that for slightly more money you can buy better quality. But if you have your heart set on this bike, do not be disappointed as it shines brightly in almost every single scenario imaginable. A truly quality road bike by Nashbar, once again.
