Almost anyone who has spent a while researching the road biking industry will already be very familiar with the Vilano Shadow road bike. The first thing that many people notice is the gorgeous aesthetics of it, it has been finished in a truly stunning smoky tone and as a result it looks very sleek on the road indeed. However, I think that it is not doing the bike justice to focus too much attention on how it looks, yes – it is a very stylish road bike, but there is an awful lot more to it than that alone. What I will start by saying is how excellent the packaging of the bike was when it arrived, in many cases I have been left returning a new bike because of damage – Vilano have done an outstanding job with the Vilano Shadow and I can’t ever see this being an issue whatsoever. Now, firstly it is crucial for me to tell you all that the Shadow is one of the least expensive road bike that is available today, many people will immediately be turned off by this, but you shouldn’t be. Yes, the Vilano Shadow is an entry level and budget priced bike, but its specifications do not reflect this one bit.
[pullquote align=”full” cite=”If you are on a budget, Vilano are on the look out for you. The Vilano Shadow is one of the finest entry level road bikes on the market and can easily compete with some of the more premium models about!” link=”” color=”#960000″ class=”” size=”18″][/pullquote]
The Vilano Shadow is designed to be a perfect starter road bike for somebody who is looking for a cheap and easy run around bike. It is a great way to get into the world of road biking and while I wouldn’t recommend it over and above many more premium models, it is great if you are on a particularly tight budget. Vilano always ensure that their bike’s are extremely versatile and they are more than capable for being used for your daily commute, training at the weekend or indeed for fun too. Ultimately I feel that this bike can easily be used as your daily rider and so if you don’t want to spend an extortionate amount of money, the Vilano Shadow road bike could be perfect for you.
This model has been built utilising Shimano’s finest STI integrated shifters, these are fairly high quality and enable a swift gear shifting motion. In the few hours that we tested this bike we found there to be no notable issues with them and you would find it quite difficult to find better quality at this price point. Similarly, the Shadow has a quality wheel set too, the bike is complete with a 700c set of double walled CNC alloy based material. Clearly Vilano has made efforts to make sure that the Shadow is a very sturdy ride that is resistant to damage too. While we experienced no difficulties on the road, we think that the Vilano Shadow will be reliable and will not break very easily. It has been designed to traverse over a range of different types of terrain without trouble. The 700x25c tires are excellent, minimal effort is required to get the bike up to speed and it can maintain velocity easily too due to the low resistance model tires.
The Vilano Shadow has been built using Shimano brakes, in fact, the majority of the components aside from the frame and saddle are made by Shimano and so you can expect a reliable ride at all times. The gear shifters and braking mechanism all come together as a solitary unit, if you would like to replace this with your own version then you will be pleased to hear that Vilano have made this very easy too. Additionally the frame has been aerodynamically designed to reduce wind resistance while on the road, the bike also promotes a great posture too – good for those that struggle with form when riding long distances. The frame itself is made of aluminum (6061) and so it is damage resistant while also being fairly lightweight. Obviously a carbon fiber frame would weigh considerably less, however these bike models usually cost considerably more – aluminum is essentially the second best option available.
