Almost everybody who has owned a road bike or has at least been relatively interested in purchasing one will be fully aware of the brand Nashbar. They are one of the longest standing road bike manufacturers in the industry and are continually pumping out bigger and better bikes almost every single year. This trend has continued once again with the Nashbar TR1 touring bike, an elegant hybrid bike that has been designed to be the ideal bike for commuters. Nashbar have produced a number of classic bikes that are of the highest standards, however there is something about the TR1 touring bike that stands out above many of the rest. The brand has been around for over 20 years now and it is regarded as being one of the finest international manufacturers around today. While this model has been predominantly for touring, it is more than capable to be used as a commuting bike or for a bit of pleasure riding on weekends. As with all of Nashbar’s road bikes, the TR1 has been created using only the finest components and so you are guaranteed to be in for a treat if you ever get to ride one.
Firstly, the Nashbar TR1 has a high quality double butted chromoly steel frame that is designed to be very strong and withstand damage. It is, by nature, made out of a heavier material than the typically used aluminum or carbon fiber, however the steel used here is very durable and reduces vibrations felt considerably – this is what makes the Nashbar TR1 a brilliant touring bike. The fork used on the bike is also crafted using chromoloy steel, however the remaining components are largely made out of aluminum based alloy in an attempt to reduce the overall weight of the bike. While it is certainly not the lightest road bike around, it is definitely one of the most durable and best designed for long distance riding. If you are planning on using this bike for your commute, you will be pleased to know that it comes with a rear rack for stacking bags on, a nice added touch to an already polished bike model.
Additionally, the TR1 road bike comes with some quality Alex DC 19 alloy wheels that are specifically made for touring bikes, they are bound by some 700c x 32c tires – these are slightly wider than the 25c width we see on the majority of road bikes these days. The added width provides more grip and stability on the road, as a result you will always feel safe, secure and ultimately stable at all times. The drivetrain has been produced by Shimano, many bikes that cost around this amount will have their supplementary components made by Shimano – this is not a negative, Shimano have been producing high quality parts for decades now. Similarly, the front and rear derailleurs are also made by Shimano and together with the three piece crankset they ensure seamless shifting between gears. This, once again, lends itself beautifully to the bike’s touring nature.

Overall, as you can all tell, I was very impressed with the AL-1 and think that it is an outstanding road bike. There were very few negatives to take away, I think that the main disadvantage for me is that for slightly more money you can buy better quality. But if you have your heart set on this bike, do not be disappointed as it shines brightly in almost every single scenario imaginable. A truly quality road bike by Nashbar, once again.
